Actually I did look it up and Beth is correct. Mostly I fly 767s and the service ceiling is 39k. That's why the 40k got my attention. Now about those recreational drugs.........

I have no idea. I've been to the top of Mt. Mitchell in NC (6,6xx feet) and been to Rocky Mount National Park which in the 14,000 feet range. Never paid attention on the plane.
